Understanding lead scoring

5 min read

Lead scoring turns engagement into a simple number. Every time a contact interacts with your emails, forms, or store, they earn points — so at a glance you can tell who's warming up and who's gone quiet.

How points are earned

BlueyEmail adds points to a contact automatically as they engage. The more valuable the action, the more points it's worth.

  • Email opened — +5. A light signal that someone is paying attention.
  • Link clicked — +10. They cared enough to act on what was inside.
  • Form submitted — +15. They handed you information on purpose.
  • Replied — +20. A direct, personal response is a strong buying signal.
  • Purchase — +50. The clearest sign of all that a contact is invested.

Scores build up over time

Points accumulate as a contact keeps engaging, so a high score usually means a history of repeated interest — not just one big action. That's what makes the number a reliable read on how warm someone is.

Find your most engaged people

Because every contact carries a score, you can sort and filter your audience by it to surface the people most likely to respond.

  • Sort your contacts by score to see your warmest leads at the top.
  • Build a segment of everyone above a score you choose — a ready-made list of your most interested contacts.
  • Flag contacts whose score has stalled at zero as candidates for a re-engagement email (or eventual cleanup).

Pair scoring with segments

A dynamic segment like "score above 40" keeps a live list of your hottest leads that refreshes itself as people engage. It's one of the most useful audiences you can build.

Trigger automations at a threshold

Scores get really powerful when you let them kick off actions for you. You can start an automation the moment a contact crosses a score threshold — no manual watching required.

  1. 1

    Decide on a threshold

Pick the score that signals someone is sales-ready — for example, 50 points.

  2. 2

Create an automation with a score trigger

Set it to start when a contact reaches or crosses your chosen score.

  3. 3

    Add the follow-up actions

Send a special offer, notify your team, or move the contact into your CRM pipeline.

  4. 4

    Turn it on

From then on, qualified contacts flow through automatically as they hit the threshold.

Put it together

A contact opens a few emails (+5 each), clicks a link (+10), and submits a form (+15) — they cross your threshold and your automation greets them with the right next message at exactly the right moment. See Automations overview to build it.
